Why You Should Read Your Policy

insurance policy papers with car key on topWhat does your auto insurance cover? It may not sound like fun, but reading through your car insurance policy is very important.

Your policy provides you with information about your plan you should know. This usually includes information about what the policy does not cover as well. Before you assume you have coverage, take a closer look at the policy details.

Look at Your Coverage Limits

Every policy will have a claim limit. This is the most it will pay when an incident occurs. There are generally two types of limits. A per-item limit is the most it will pay for a specific item or loss. A total maximum value is also a key piece of information. It is the most possible paid out.

Keep in mind that this amount may include when the vehicle is a total loss. Is this enough to cover your existing loan? Will it be enough to let you buy a new car and pay off medical bills? Ask that question when selecting your policy limits. At the end of the day, you want to be able to afford repairs to your vehicle.

Look at Exclusions

Most auto insurance policies have exclusions. These are specific types of perils or situations where the plan does not pay you. For example, most insurance never pays for damage caused by normal wear and tear or neglect. If you do not replace your tires, and you get a flat while driving, this can cause an accident. You may not have coverage for that accident and the damage from it because it is normal wear and tear. Look over your policy for all exclusions. Knowing what is not covered can help you better control your safety while driving.

Look at The Policy's Discounts

Most insurance policies will qualify for some type of discount. Being a safe driver and a good student in school might help teens get a lower rate. Being claim-free can help you. You may qualify for a discount for a security system or for having anti-lock brakes. Many times, insurance companies will offer discounts if you bundle your auto insurance with your home or life insurance. Look at your policy to see what discounts you have already. Then, ask about other available discounts.

The more information you know about your coverage, the more prepared you are. When an accident occurs, you need to know if you can file a claim. You also need to know how to get in touch with your car insurance provider to file that claim. By reading over your policy, you can better know its strengths and weaknesses. Your insurance agent can help you clarify any unfamiliar points.
