Thunderstorms happen in most areas of the United States. Even a moderate storm can cause significant damage to a structure. In some situations, there is little you can do to prevent this. However, if your home is safe, it may be less likely for you to file a home insurance claim. This can translate into a lower premium for you to pay. What can help you reduce your costs?
Where to Start
Take a walk around your home. Do the same outside. Where are the risks to you? What could happen in a thunderstorm to cause damage to your home? These are some key areas to focus on.
Tree Branches
A very common cause of damage in thunderstorms is tree branches falling and hitting the structure. You can have trees around your home. However, you should look for areas of risk.
- Remove dead limbs
- Be sure no limbs overhang the top of the home
- Remove trees with disease or dead trees
Taking these steps can help to minimize damage to your home from the trees themselves. Here, the implication is a tree striking the home. But do not forget the root system. If tree roots tunnel into your home’s drain system, this can make flooding a concern. Be sure to snake the drain lines each year to look for these risks.
Property Damage
How many items do you have on your patio or deck? Are they light in weight? If so, find a way to store them out of the way of a storm.
For example, you may want to stack chairs ahead of a storm. Take down your umbrella. Remove items that are specifically easy for the storm to toss around. These items easily can hit into a window during a storm. This can cause significant damage.
Look for other risk factors, too. Secure the foundation to minimize the risk of floods. Be sure the windows and roof have proper sealants on them. Prevent any type of moisture from getting into the space.
Let your home insurance agent know if you take significant steps to improve home safety. If you do not have to file a home insurance claim often, this helps keep your rates lower. Discuss claims from the past. Can you minimize those risks? Let your agent help you determine the best ways for you to protect your home.
